Dooars Safari — What to Expect When You Come Face-to-Face with a Rhino

Dooars safari — spotted deer drinking at jungle stream in Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

A Dooars safari is one of the most underrated wildlife experiences in India. The Dooars — the terai grasslands at the foot of the eastern Himalayas in West Bengal — hold four national parks and wildlife sanctuaries within 200km of each other. I have been guiding here for 18 years. In that time I have watched tourists leave stunned, because nothing prepares you for a one-horned rhinoceros walking across the road 10 metres in front of your jeep.

What Is a Dooars Safari?

The Dooars ("doors" to Bhutan) is the name for the floodplain corridor between the Himalayan foothills and the Bengal plains. Four wildlife areas anchor the Dooars safari circuit:

Dooars Safari: Gorumara National Park

Dooars safari — Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary with river and forest, Dooars terai habitat

The Dooars terai — grasslands and rivers at the base of the Himalayas

Gorumara National Park is the best place in West Bengal for a first Dooars safari. It has the highest jeep road density of the four parks, giving you the best chance of sightings. The park holds a significant Indian one-horned rhinoceros population, Indian bison (gaur), Asian elephants, and a large variety of birdlife including hornbills, kingfishers, and eagles.

Jeep safari: Rs 1,500–2,200 per vehicle (6 passengers) + Rs 150 permit per person. Morning safaris (6–9am) give the best sightings. Watchtowers at Medla, Dhupjhora, and Jatraprasad are the best vantage points for rhino sightings.

Dooars Safari: Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara National Park has the highest concentration of one-horned rhinoceros in West Bengal — over 250 rhinos in a 216 sq km park. The recommended Dooars safari here is the elephant safari: riding on a trained elephant into the tall elephant grass where jeeps cannot penetrate. Rhino encounters at 5–15 metres are common. The elephant safari departs at 5:30am and 3:30pm daily.

Elephant safari cost: Rs 500–600 per person. Book through the Forest Department at Hollong tourist lodge (advance booking strongly recommended in peak season).

Dooars Safari: Jeep vs Elephant Safari

Jeep Safari

  • Cover more ground
  • Better for birding
  • Can reverse quickly if needed
  • Rs 250–370 per person
  • Best at Gorumara & Buxa

Elephant Safari

  • Goes into tall grass
  • Silent approach to rhinos
  • More intimate experience
  • Rs 500–600 per person
  • Best at Jaldapara

Our recommendation: do both. Book a jeep safari at Gorumara and an elephant safari at Jaldapara — they are 60km apart and can be done on consecutive mornings.

Dooars Safari: Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Fort — a historic British-era structure inside the tiger reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve is the largest and least-visited of the Dooars safari parks. Buxa Fort, a British-era stone fort used to guard the trade route to Bhutan, sits inside the reserve at 867 metres and requires a 9km trek. Tiger sightings are rare but camera traps confirm resident tigers. Elephant herds cross through Buxa regularly. Birdwatching here is exceptional — over 270 species recorded. Combined with our Bhutan tours, Buxa makes a natural stop on the way to Phuentsholing.

Dooars Safari Best Time to Visit

Tips from Rajesh — 18 Years as a Dooars Safari Guide

From Rajesh: "The best Dooars safari I ever ran was a foggy November morning at Gorumara. A rhino mother and her calf were standing in the mist 15 metres off the road. Nobody breathed for two minutes. That is what this place does to you."
