Solo travellers will pay more (shared jeep seats are per-person, but rooms are per-room). The biggest cost variable is accommodation: Gangtok has a huge spread from Rs 400 dormitories to Rs 8,000 boutique hotels.
The other variable is permits. Sikkim has more permit requirements than most Indian states — but the permits themselves are very cheap (Rs 100–200 each). What costs money is the mandatory vehicle hire for permit areas. Sikkimese food is excellent and cheap. The staples for a Sikkim budget trip:
- Thukpa — noodle soup with vegetables or meat, Rs 80–120 at local restaurants. A meal in itself.
- Momos — steamed or fried dumplings, Rs 60–100 for 10 pieces. Darjeeling-Sikkim momos are the benchmark for the rest of the country.
