Every year, thousands of tourists drive through Kalimpong on their way to Darjeeling and never stop. They are making a mistake. A Kalimpong weekend trip gives you everything Darjeeling has — Himalayan views, colonial architecture, mountain food, quiet monastery mornings — without the crowds, without the commercial noise, and at half the price. I live here. This is my honest guide.
Darjeeling is magnificent but it is also extremely crowded, especially on weekends. Kalimpong (altitude 1,247m) sits 51km from Darjeeling on a ridge above the Teesta River with views north to Kanchenjunga and south across the Bengal plains. It receives less than a quarter of Darjeeling's tourist numbers. Hotels are significantly cheaper. Momos are, in the opinion of most locals, better.
Kalimpong also has something Darjeeling does not: a world-class nursery district. Over 50 flower and cactus nurseries cluster in the Sixth Mile area — cacti, orchids, and gladioli exported to Europe. Walking through them on a misty morning is genuinely extraordinary.
Deolo Hill at 2,100 metres — the best Himalayan panorama in Kalimpong
Arrive by 11am. Check into your hotel (Kalimpong Park Hotel, Silver Oaks, or budget options near Main Road). Lunch: Dal, rice, and the local pork curry at a local dhaba.
Afternoon: Deolo Hill (2,100m) — highest point in Kalimpong, with a park and clear views of Kanchenjunga, Siniolchu, and the Teesta valley on clear days. Entry Rs 20. Then: Morgan House — a 1930s colonial bungalow converted to a heritage hotel by West Bengal Tourism. Even if you are not staying here, the garden and architecture are worth the visit (free entry to grounds).
Evening: Walk through the Sixth Mile nursery district for sunset light through cactus and orchid greenhouses.
Durpin Monastery at dawn — one of the best morning experiences in Kalimpong
7am: Durpin Monastery (also called Zang Dhok Palri Phodang) at dawn — perched on a hilltop south of town with views across the plains. Morning prayers at 7:30am open to visitors. The monastery was consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976 and holds rare Buddhist texts.
9am: Dr Graham's Homes — a working school and community established by Dr John Anderson Graham in 1900 for underprivileged Eurasian children. The grounds and chapel are architecturally significant and open to visitors. Walk the heritage trail through the campus.
11am: Lepcha Museum — small but genuine museum documenting the Lepcha people, one of the earliest indigenous groups in the Darjeeling hills. Handwritten manuscripts, traditional tools, and Lepcha costumes. Rs 20 entry, 30 minutes well spent.
12:30pm: Lunch at Gompu's or any local restaurant near Mela Ground. Order the pork momos. This is Kalimpong's most repeated recommendation from every local.
Return journey by 2pm to reach NJP or Darjeeling by evening.
The Lepcha Museum — 30 minutes that most visitors do not take but always recommend afterwards

Two days in Darjeeling, two days in Kalimpong — this is the Himalayan hill station circuit that gives you the best of both. Darjeeling covers the iconic: Tiger Hill, Toy Train, tea estate. Kalimpong covers the authentic: fewer tourists, better momos, colonial bungalows, Lepcha culture, and a mountain morning that feels like you discovered it yourself.
Local tip: Arrive in Kalimpong on a Sunday morning and visit the weekly cattle market below Mela Ground. It has been running for over 100 years. Nothing tourist-adjusted about it.
